So what was the white/light grey smoke after the failure? I am no expert on blown engines but I was confused. Usually water evaporates and dissipates almost immediately, this did not. And oil is usually smoky bluish. Any ideas?

Well got Cody’s engine. Found block junk and cylinder across junk. Number 2 had rust.

3@4 both look like not broken in looking at cylinder walls. This is NO WAY a tune issue. So people can stop with that.



it’s a injector or a piston ring problem.

Not impressed with the rust crude on the rings, looks as if it was installed in a rusted cyl bore. If this is true it would not be reasonable to think it would survive long.

Ok, I hate to hijack Cody’s thread, but this is the second 2022RE that melted down at an event I was attending (maybe I’m the jinx?). The first was an extremely aggressive mod/tune, maybe that was a fluke. Then Cody, a mild tune!?!?! And there are suggestions that there are other 2022’s with probs? I would think any surface rust on the cylinder walls would wear off in 100mi, he had 14k!?!?! My Challenger was built about the same time as Cody’s Charger, maybe a month before the other I mentioned. I was ready to do a Jon tune but now I’m scared crapless. Before the 2022’s it seemed like these were bulletproof.

Good question, although we have yet to get injector results back (should have this week). Very possible that that is what happened on mine and it will be cut and dry. Otherwise, we may never know.

Injector tests will be interesting, but that rust colored crap on the rings sure worries me. Like there was water in you oil? I don't think so. Maybe you had a leaky head gasket? Not sure you would do 10.5 stock with a bad gasket. All this makes me worried. I was an engineer once-upon-a-time, I like facts and certanity. Which is probably why I don't read fiction!

I wish I could fish a camera into my crankcase for a look...

My guess is all that damage happened after the pass as it was idling. As you recall it ran for probably 5-10 minutes, destroying itself further in that time as we now know! Then it sat for 3 weeks outside bathed in whatever fluids it mixed up before the shop could look at it.

That makes sense. Especially if they attempted a start at the shop before dissecting it. Thanks for the reassurance!

mine is a 2020 and I had issues
