Just had the DR's balanced, they used 1oz weights, they only touch at the ends. I don't like the way this looks, I figure I'll pull them off and replace them wit 1/4's. Just wondering if the real racers out there think I'm doing the right thing.

Put duct tape over them.

never seen any that big. They not know the wheels are round:unsure:
I would replace them with 1/4 and find a different shop in the future

He can use a rubber mallet and then cover with duct tape until he gets them redone.

The weights are steel, the wheel might very well yield before the weight.

I thought they were lead? Heavy, flexible metal.

This was the "good" shop, these were the guys that saved me after the "bad" shop f'd them up. Minor thing to swap to 1/4's, thanks.

Apparently they are mostly or all "lead free" now, I guess they are afraid some will fly off in Alligator Alley and might get eaten!

That's why I duct tape them on. Stops them from flying off at 140 mph and damaging the car.

Just a quick tip: you can put duct tape down first then stick the 1/4 weights on the tape. The tape peels off the wheel nicely when it is time to rebalancce or replace. Put some over them as well like Dave said so they won't go sailing at speed.

You can also use balance beads. One the drag radial slips you will have to re balance, balance beads are good to go.

For some reason I never had success with them. Still have a bunch in the cabinet.

I found the most success just balancing the wheel and forgetting about the tire. You get shake down the track, but it's limited and it doesn't get worse as the tire moves on the rim, in my case.

I know that worked for you but when our guy did that, they were 5 and 8oz off after mounting the tires. I did 10.617 shaking terribly, I think I would have easily been in the 10.5's if they were balanced.

One tire was severely damaged by the bad shop and a big chunk was removed before remounting, I was worried it would not seal but happy it did.

Every time we change DR, we always balance the wheel and tire and never use duck tape. Duck tap is suspect LOL!

I have the Billet Specialties Win Lites and M/T 315/50R17 DR's. I used 2 of the 4oz. balance beads bags per the manufacturers guide. This car shakes really bad from about 75 MPH and on. I mean it's bad. Tempted to pull them down and go with regular stick-on weights. The wheels are bead locks.

Balance beads can work well in narrow tires, like in a motorcycle or tractor trailer application.

I've had miserable results using them in wide tires, especially with wheels with a fair amount of negative offset.

I balanced on a spin balancer this time.

One took right at 4oz or so and the other 6.5 ish.

100% smooth as glass down the track.

MT says 8oz is about the limit. I was worried about the 6.5 ish one but it's got half a dozen passes now. Still smooth as glass...even after my John force burnout glazed off about 25% of the tread. Dumbass.

Anything less than a spin balance would be 1800s style. These days a road force balance is available, and unbeatable.

Well, as long as the operator is at least as competent as the balancer, which unfortunately isn't always the case.
