Is it as easy to install as it is for the 392? Looks like the thermostat housing is even easier to access on this Supercharged motor.

Real easy , use a zip lock baggy tapped up under T stat housing to catch coolant , replace stat & pour coolant back into reservoir tank.

If you're stock with no tune might get a CEL with a 180. My buddy did so he went with a 190. So that's what I ran with. Just an FYI I've seen.

Yep, Eric, looks like same thing, same iddiot light triggered as it was 15 years ago. I hate my OEM thermo, it lets it go to 230 the first time warming up, then it just runs hot a 200-205. I am getting close to just accepting this thing, and tearing into it soon to make it better.

Yes Speedy does! It's funny I was waiting for him to talk about the orientation of the jiggle valve, and he almost skipped past it, then stopped to make the point and that's when his coolant bag fell! Overall yeah this is an easy job even if you do that - and I have - but sometimes you can swap them and keep it very clean. In my 392s I used to always swap them in April and then back to stock in November.

Thanks for the replies guys, just wanted to make sure there were no surprises waiting for me. I'm hoping to get this done Thursday or Friday. I do see that it's a tighter fit with the wrenches and plastic bag than it looks...I just did some test fitting.

I put a 180 in stock Redeye with not issues. While at it I replaced the thermostat housing. 564EDFA2-37B5-4A5B-9FF1-12A6354C1A11.jpeg

Now that the pic is flipped the coolant will drain out when you change the thermostat. I like the less messy vertical method better.

LOL well mission accomplished, and it was one of my cleanest swaps ever! FWIW only thing I noticed slightly different was my thermostat housing bolts were 1/2 inch, not 13mm or whatever.

Is there a reason that FCA would want these engines running these temps?
I am not happy with how hot my car runs but I would think that Dodge may have a reason as to why it runs this temp.

Would they want the extra heat to evaporate any moisture that forms in the crank case?

A year a go I read a comment concerning this exact point. This person was exact to the point of why they want this engine to run this tempt. Him or her brought up 6 different points of why this has to run this tempt. Sounded like an engineer to me. But, it made a lot of cents. I have run 180s in Fla for years, do to the fact of the tuning and it runs at a higher tempt. But just to run a 180- 160 tempt was not designed for this engine to run this cool. I wished I had copied that comment, cause I had never heard that reasoning before and to this redneck, it made perfect cents.

Knock on wood, but I have never thrown a tstat code in any of my SRT Hemis, had 4 over 14 years now and I've run 180 tstats in all of them, but I also swap the stock tstat back in for the winter. Like stated above, I usually swap in April/November. It's so easy with our cars, takes me about 10 minutes. Keeps the coolant pretty close to 200 year round +/-

Is there a reason that FCA would want these engines running these temps?

I think it's primarily for emissions purposes. Yeah they run so hot it looks like it fades and deteriorates the plastic and rubber parts under the hood over time. Makes your garage a million degrees for a few hours after you park it LOL

Here, there, any where in Florida,, except god awful Tally ass ee do you need to swap your stat. It will run at 170 all the time and fine as wine. Unless you change the timing the factory tempt is set fer a reason. Not my descision but it seems to work and under warranty sit you ations,, it works.
