Had a little hiccup with the daily driver.
In the meantime, I'm in a rental Nissan Versa hatch to fully appreciate my full time vehicle 😦
I switched my setup to flex fuel, 2.56 litens, 105mm HHP TB, and a ported snout from FAS.
During the couple dial in runs on the dyno to make sure the flex tune was doing what it should, power was way down compared to what it should be. After it was started back up it started tapping from the topside. Confidence is that a lifter has failed or is on its way to failing. Tapping sound was there and then went away, which indicates a lifter as well to me vs. a broken rocker, valve spring, etc. which would be a constant new valve train noise once it's broken.
Plan of action was to inspect the lifters and to insure the cam didn't receive any beating from the issue. With the labor cost associated with that, the wheels started turning (came off) in my head. My only thought was what if I put it back together and then it chucks a rod over the summer? I would have to go through this process and potentially wait quite a bit of time due to peak season.
The car has 21,000 miles on it, but has seen well over 200+ WOT hits through the gears + a dozen or so track passes and has been a "900rwhp" setup most of its life on e85. I've been dialed in with oil changes, filter, etc. and the car has been extremely well maintained, but things happen. It is a daily driver for me and sees all seasons in the midwest. This is the first mechanical problem I've had with the vehicle in 3 years.
I decided while everything is out and exposed that I am going to re-enforce the bottom end, add a cam, and put headers on it.
Luckily it's January here in Chicago and not "good" weather. I decided to "tinker" with the car in the off-season, which exposed this problem sooner than later. Shortblock arrives in 2 weeks, and then it will be buttoned back up and finished. I'll provide more details when it is completed.
