Looking for recommendations in the PHX area. This morning I cranked the car and it sounded different, thought "what is that?" Popped the hood, the supercharger is making a bit of noise. Not terrible but more than I think is appropriate. 2016 Challenger.

My thought is, all the 2015, 2016, and from what I've read maybe early 2017's were built with the same manufacturing processes and tolerances from IHI, so regardless of how much noise it is making, it should be replaced if you can get a dealer to work with you.

Admittedly, I'm not all that smart on the process or the history of the issue. I've got about 10 months left on the power train warranty. I'll probably have them do the V86 recall as well.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

@Diboblo recently had his replaced on his Charger. He can probably offer some help with that part, but he lives in Calif, not sure if he'll have a recommendation for AZ. He documented his replacement pretty well.

I have this to some degree...

For a long time I've debated whether to take mine in for warranty (and having to go through the process of "winning" the argument of warranty...)

With mine being a garage queen and the very limited miles that goes with it I've decided that this upcoming Winter, I'm going to send it to Joker for a full rework instead.

Yes it costs me money, but in theory I have better bearings, and certainly better flow.

That discussion regarding boost/psi/DA gets a shot in the arm too.

Well DUH on my part......I knew there had to be someone in AZ that could recommend a dealer.....for some reason I drew a blank on that part, and just remembered that Bob had recently had is S/C replaced (probably becasue he did such a nice job on documenting the process from start to finish.

Didn't mean to overlook @Paladin06 for the location grab.

I'll go stand in the corner for a few minutes so that I can think about what I've done :D

One thing you might consider doing is take the car by SRT Autoworks in North Phoenix and have Tommy take a listen. He will be able to tell you if you have the common bearing issue or not. Rather than depending on a less than straight forward dealer service dept. If it does need the SC replaced under warranty then he can tell you which dealer in the area can be trusted to do that right. If it turns out that there is a issue with the warranty covering whatever they find, then that shop can provide you with a fix. They replace stock superchargers all the time so they could have a supply of healthy ones looking for new homes.

@Diboblo recently had his replaced on his Charger. He can probably offer some help with that part, but he lives in Calif, not sure if he'll have a recommendation for AZ. He documented his replacement pretty well.
The thread regarding my sc failure is pretty straightforward. I posted my sc noise. Found the Star Case related to it. Found several videos with good sc's and headed to the dealer.

At the dealer, I first played the video of my bad sc... then the videos of good sc's. The kicker is that when the service writer and I went outside to have a listen to my car... it sounded 10x worse.

It took a very short time for my sc to go from bad to worse. It was squealing at idle and a you could hear it, inside the cabin, when running... and at shutdown, it sounded like a straight cut gear transmission winding down.

Here it is, bad:

Here it is, after replacement:

Though the dealer hadn't heard of this failure, at the time, it was clear that by the presence of the Star Case and the sound of my sc, that they would push it through as a warranty.

Took a short time for FCA to approve it, based on the criteria in the full star case... photo of the part number on the sc, video of it running and under load, then at shutdown.

It was replaced under warranty... full kit and caboodle. Sc. Fuel rails. Injectors. Gaskets. Everything on top of the engine.

Just do your due diligence. That's what makes the difference. At the time, it was a $6000 kit.

Feel free to reach out to me, if you have any questions. As always, I'm here to help.

Bob

I agree. Try SRT Works first and then go from there. Good luck.

I doubt it, that was forever ago.

That high pitched sound, that is more pronounced at :13, is a problem. Sounds like it's well on it's way to needing a replacement. That's what mine started out as... then deteriorated rapidly. Mine is a daily driver, so keep that in mind, as far as how fast it crapped out, once I noticed it.

How does it sound, at shutdown?

Bob

Haven't listened to it at shutdown yet. What am I listening for? That clicking sound in your vid?

Doesn't sound as bad once the engine is warm, here's a video warm:

It may sound like gear on gear whining. Almost like a buzzing sound. Mine got loud, at shutdown.
