Got my licences in a 1972 Mercury Comet GT with the large bench from seat. Chocolate brown gold metal flake on the bottom and hard white top.

But mine had 5 slot clay mag wheels.

Drivers ed? Mine was my brother Dan. Pinto manual. Bottom of the steepest hill in the neighborhood...ok Jim, lets go! Guess that's the beginning of my journey with manuals!
Cut my teeth on manuals in a Pinto WAGON lol so there. To its credit, it did have a huge Hurst T-handle shifter (which made me laugh out loud) Belonged to a friend.

lol how did you manage that? grow up on base?
Nope. I was the first member in my family to join the military. I left home right after my 18th birthday (no license) and got my license when I got to Germany.

The Army saved my life. All the guys I hung with were dead by the time I had 1 year in the Army. 🙁I still think about them.

Did my drivers test in the folk’s 1966 Chevy Biscayne 6 cyl 3 spd. Column shift. A year later I happened to be driving same car when a drunk hit me head on. I was somehow unhurt. Car was totaled. Folks let me buy my own wheels after that.

Early 70’s Ford Maverick. If you were lucky enough to get in you could take drivers ed during school hours and actually got course credits, pretty cool. I loved how the instructor had his own brake pedal with that long bar that connected it to drivers side brake. When I figured out what he was doing riding the brake all the time I purposely didn’t touch the brake when coming to a stop sign. You should have seen the look on the guys face, he told me not to be a wise ass. Pretty funny.

I took the driver's ed classroom portion in the last quarter of my 8th grade year and the driving portion that summer. In Idaho, at the time, you could get your license at 14 1/2. We used a 1989 Geo Spectrum with a manual. In the town I grew up, we had a notoriously steep road that our instructor would always use to test student drivers. We had to drive halfway up the road, stop, put the parking break on, and shut down the engine. We then had to start the car back up, and with a combo of the parking break, clutch, and gas we had to proceed up the rest of the hill. The instructor would fail you if you stalled the engine, spun the wheels, or cooked the clutch. I was one of the lucky few that only had to do it once to pass. I had some practice on hills in the back 40 of my grandpa's ranch in his truck.

First car driven was a Red 1960 Ford Falcon automatic shift. I was 5 years old sitting on blankets with a block of wood between my foot and the accelerator. Looked through the steering wheel opening. Drove 86 miles in the middle of the night with my dad in the passenger seat drinking Drewry's beer. Today they would have locked him up for allowing me to do that but in my book he was the coolest dad ever. First driver's training car was a 1971 4 door Ford Galaxie. Our H.S. driver training instructor Mr. Young was something else. He would hit on the girls, teach us aggressive driving maneuvers, stop and get groceries at the local IGA and deliver them to his house with us in the car, etc. We would have 3 students and him in the car. He let me drive one time and asked me if I had driven before. I said YES and that was the extent of the training.

First car I drove was a truck...an old '66 C10 long bed farm truck with 3 on-the-tree! I about gave us both whiplash as I was horrible with the clutch...but I only drove it around the horse pasture.

Since I worked since I was like 13 or so, I ended up paying a driving school to get my license...AAA driving school. It was a white '79 (or so) Camaro with a weak V6....stepping on the gas was like stepping on a frog....lol. But the instructor was great!! Gotta have nerves of steel (or nuts) to be a driving instructor....
