I was always amazed when visiting friends in Chicago suburbs years ago. The unions had really padded the building codes. All the romex in the basement had to be enclosed in metal tubing, two sump pumps, etc.
My neighborhood in Cook County required all conduit! And yes, 2 sump pumps. All back in the day. They have been corrupt for over a century!

Aside from dictatorial state gov. and lofty property taxes...WNY...(not NYC area)..we're as far west as you can get from that cesspool...is really a great place..avid sports town..tons of recreation venues...NO TRAFFIC...you can get across town from anywhere in 20 minutes..realestate is reasonable..summer is great as well as spring and fall...winter can be difficult @ times...awesome restaurants...(with no waiting)...cultural venues...and of course Lake Erie..for watersports....No wildfires..no hurricanes...no floods..no monsoons..no earthquakes....NO SHARKS...NO GATORS...NO LIZZARDS...NO MOUNTAIN LIONS...and good paying jobs...(for those that want them...)...don't see me leaving anytime soon(y)
One thing that would save the country (and in turn save the world and humanity) would be to allow large states with divided city and rural areas to split. They have 2 completely different cultures, one dictating, the other being dictated by the capitol. Few examples are MA, NY, PA, WA, CA, OR. But none of these states would ever split, it would completely flip the electoral college. The libs would start a civil war to stop any such action as such a split would be their death sentence. Too much freedom would kill the libs.

It's not just large states. Most citizens here are honest and hardworking...but are ruled by Santa Fe. And the many people in Albuquerque don't exactly help. It's not a state issue as much as a large city issue, I think.

And an interesting twist here is that many dems are actually quite conservative, but know they won't get voted in as republicans.

Yes. @1971demon gave a good answer, but the simple answer is yes. A modest home in a good neighborhood is $8k, easy. A nicer house in a nicer neighborhood, you can eclipse $20k pretty easily in property taxes. The gift that keeps on giving.

Edit - to be fair, I’m including school taxes in those numbers. On a $250k house in a good hood it’s $4k in property and $4k in school.
And I thought MI taxes were bad😳

Been compulsory in England for a while now, last year I built four apartments and had to fit EV chargers, the cost with software for charging was about £4k.
Adjacent to the apartments is a separately leased car park giving a total of twenty four parking spaces that can use the charging facilities.

Revenue received from charger use after twelve months= zero 🤪🤣🤣
Now that Charlie finally got a job..(after living with his mother for 74 years)...you might see reform..how bout startin with drivin on the right side of the road for a change...:giggle::giggle::giggle:;)

I wish
Check out the sizes & prices
This is feet
Lots are getting smaller & smaller
Congestion gets worse
Nature gets screwed
As always its about the money
City people don t care they can shake the neighbors hand thru the bathroom window
Don t even think about all the houses are 2 stories & all the neighbors see into your yard
Below is more farm land getting ruined

Neighbors can almost share rain gutters & they do share sidewalks the houses are so close
You want something in the back yard after the house is built ?
Good effin luck

BLOWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yuck. I couldn't live like that.

Somewhat frequently I think about how nice it is to be able to go outside the garage or house and take a leak, without anyone seeing me. And there's no need for curtains and such, other than to keep the sun from heating up the house during the summer.

Left that state in 2015 after having spent 11 years there. Lived about 40 minutes West of Chicago. Traffic was horrendous. High cost of living, toll roads, a lot of rude people, emissions check point requirements and overall crime was the reason. Michigan isn't perfect (especially under Democratic control), but way better than Illinois. The only thing I miss about the Chicago area is the great restaurant choices and their hospital and medical services providers are good.

I would imagine that they're experts on bullet wounds.

You forgot road rage, before I left in '94 I tangled a-holes probably once every couple months. Done with that crap.

The lure of the area is it has lots of conveniences and lots of very good paying jobs. Well worth a pay cut to gtfo!
